Ten members of a machete-wielding gang accused of terrorising residents within Likoni’s Timbwani and Shikaadabu areas have been arrested.
The ten. Iddi Juma Mwavumba,Gulam Hassan Ali, Salim Kassim, Juma Idd Ismael, Emanuel Okesh Karisa,Emanuel Evans Mwarenye, Yusuf Said Kahindi Abubakar Lenox Otieno, Imael Arome Zero and Hassan Juma Chaila were arrested in their hideout in an incomplete house at Pepon village in Vanga estate area within Timbwani ward.
Two pangas, a crawbar, two knives and three mobile phones suspected to have been stolen were recovered during the operation
Likoni sub-county police commander, Geoffrey Ruheni said, all the suspects believed to be members of an infamous gang dubbed "Panga Boys’, were rounded up in their hideout in an incomplete house locked from inside at Peponi villa area in Timbwani during a security sting conducted by detectives from Shelly Beach Police station In a bid to phase out the gang and put it where they belong.
Ruheni added that the gang is known to operate with impunity while armed with crude weapons, including daggers. Crowbars and machetes.
They stage robberies during football events, weddings, and muggings on lone pedestrians.
“They are being interrogated ahead of their arraignment even as the operation continues,” Ruheni said.
Likoni residents have been living in fear of attacks from members of the dreaded Panga Boys who have been wreaking havoc in the area for a while now.
On Tuesday, police shot down one suspected member of a gang at Aproved area within the Timbwani ward by officers from Inuka Police station after he, together with three others, was found robbing a resident.
The suspect was found with a panga. His death came weeks after another gang leader from "Waasi" criminal group was apprehended in December 2024 at Office ya Jara area while escaping after he together with his six member team had staged a robbery at Dudus area targeting residents who were on their ways back home from enjoying their Christmas robbing them of money and other valuables.
23-year-old Juma Omar alias Ali alias Jay Jay alias Brigadier, who had been on the police wanted list for long, was arrested by undercover officers from Inuka police station during a routine patrol.
